Southminster Presbyterian Church
Mission at Southminster

Southminster’s Mission Team strives to educate and motivate the congregation to reach out in the name of Jesus Christ, by becoming involved in a variety of mission efforts through the Presbyterian Church (USA) and other worthwhile agencies.

In 2008-2009, the Mission Team is undertaking two challenging goals:

We are asking everyone in our congregation to get involved in some form of hands-on mission project-a goal of 100% participation in mission. We are also focusing on ways to help eliminate hunger in our world-through a letter writing campaign to our elected officials, and a food packaging day with the "Feed Our Starving Children" organization. Serving others is the third component of Southminster's mission "To Invite, To Nurture, and To Go."

Our mission efforts touch the lives of many people. Projects range in location from Southminster’s own Arlington Heights and surrounding Chicagoland communities, to various locations throughout the United States and across the globe. Some of our recent mission work includes:
Easter egg hunt
Children are entertained and taught about God through Christian clowns.
Delivering baby shower gifts
Our mission team drove a 15-foot rental truck full of household furniture and items to RRC in Chicago.

Food, clothing, and furniture have been donated to several local agencies, including Christopher House in Chicago, Meadows Community Services in Rolling Meadows, and RRC, an agency that helps people move from homelessness to their own apartments.

School supplies have been donated to agencies for after school programs such as Good News Partners and Starfish in the Howard Street area of northeast Chicago.

Members of Southminster have done a variety of mission work in Guatemala, Albania, Kenya, Cameroon, and Senegal, Africa--including teaching, working in medical facilities, and giving Marriage Encounter Seminars.

A letter writing campaign for Bread for the World has been conducted in each of the last three years to encourage political leaders to support hunger issues.

a long day of work in Gulfport, MS

Adults from our congregation have traveled to Gulfport, Pensacola, and New Orleans, and helped with substantial restoration of three homes ruined by hurricanes.

Southminster is involved in an on-going relationship with Agape house, a center for Christian Ministry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
